The Quiet Body II (Gathered)

In Gathered, a seated figure bends forward, his face almost entirely concealed behind overlapping hands. Enlarged by their position close to the viewer, the hands become the centre of the composition — clasping, covering and supporting at once.

The body appears to gather itself around this gesture. Head, shoulders and hands fold into a compact form, creating a sense of concentrated inwardness. Warm flesh tones emerge against the muted rose ground, while the dark base gives weight to the figure and anchors the small painting.

The gesture remains deliberately open. It might suggest contemplation, protection, composure or prayer, but none is definitive. Instead, Gathered considers the simple act of drawing oneself inward — gathering the body, thoughts and attention into a private moment of stillness.

The painting forms the central panel of The Quiet Body, a triptych exploring vulnerability, contemplation and the inner states expressed through bodily gesture. It may be displayed independently or together with the other two panels.
