Inspired by a photograph by Rebecca Douglas-Home, Stone Skipping began with a simple scene on a stony shoreline: figures gathered at the water’s edge, each absorbed in a small act of play or reflection. What drew my attention was not only the movement of the stones across the water, but the quiet presence of the figure who pauses and does not throw.

While working on the painting, I found myself thinking about the many ways we participate in life. Some moments ask for action, others for stillness. Sometimes we move forward instinctively; at other times, we remain suspended in observation, allowing the world to unfold around us. The painting became less about the gesture itself and more about the subtle emotional space between action and restraint.

Painted in Glasgow, the work forms part of my ongoing exploration of memory, presence, and the human figure within atmospheric landscapes. The muted palette and softened edges allow the scene to hover between recollection and immediate experience, like a fragment of memory returning slowly to the surface.
