Shadow I — from the Shadows series

A dark human silhouette enters the composition from the edge, one arm raised and the hand opened against fields of yellow, orange and deep blue. Reduced to shadow, the figure loses its individual identity and becomes a gesture — a trace of bodily presence.

The print developed from my interest in shadows as images that belong to us yet remain separate from us. A shadow reveals the presence of a body without describing the person who casts it, occupying an uncertain space between the physical and the intangible.

Layered areas of colour shift and overlap across the surface, allowing secondary tones and traces of the printing process to remain visible. The raised hand becomes both recognisable and ambiguous: it might be reaching, signalling, touching or simply passing through the image.

Part of the Shadows series, the work explores the human figure through silhouette, colour and absence, considering how the simplest trace of the body can still carry a sense of presence.
