Myrtle moves between intimacy and memory, holding a quiet moment of closeness that feels both deeply personal and archetypal. Inspired by the ancient symbolism of the myrtle plant — long associated with weddings, devotion, and fertility — the painting reflects on love not as spectacle, but as a form of shelter: something tender, fragile, and enduring at once.

The two figures stand closely intertwined, suspended somewhere between appearance and disappearance. Their bodies soften into the surface of the canvas, as though emerging from memory itself. Yet the gesture of the man’s hands resting gently on the woman’s shoulders remains clear and present, grounding the work in a sense of care, protection, and emotional trust.

Built around the tension between deep reds and muted blues, the painting evokes both warmth and distance, blood and water, body and inheritance. These colours move through the composition like emotional currents, suggesting the invisible bonds that connect one life to another across time.

Painted in Glasgow, Myrtle forms part of my ongoing exploration of the human figure, memory, and spiritual identity.
