In Mask, a young man sits in quiet profile, holding a cast of his own face in his hand. The gesture feels intimate and contemplative, as though he is studying a version of himself that has already begun to drift into the past. Suspended between recognition and release, the figure appears caught in a moment of silent reckoning.

Throughout history, masks have carried many meanings — concealment, transformation, ritual, protection. From theatre and religious ceremony to the preserved death masks of ancient Europe, they have served as fragile records of identity, memory, and human presence. Here, the white cast becomes something deeply personal: a trace of the self once inhabited, but no longer fully belonging to the figure who holds it.

The painting reflects on the subtle tension between who we are and who we have been. The mask may suggest a role outgrown, an image carefully constructed, or a former self that must be gently laid aside in order for something more truthful to emerge.

Painted in Glasgow as part of my ongoing exploration of memory, spiritual identity, and the human figure, Mask inhabits a space between portrait and meditation. The restrained palette and softened atmosphere allow the work to unfold slowly, inviting reflection on the identities we carry, protect, and eventually release.
