Echoes of Memory began with a shell I have kept since childhood.
I bought it during a school trip to the Baltic Sea when I was thirteen, travelling with my brother and sister. My brother died years later, at the age of twenty-two. The shell remained.
For this drawing, I asked my daughter to hold it and pose for me. Watching an object from my own childhood pass into her hands brought together two different moments in my life — the family I came from and the family I am raising now.
There is an old fascination with holding a shell to the ear and imagining that we can hear the sea within it. What we actually hear is the resonance of the world around us. I began to think of memory in a similar way: the past does not return unchanged, but is heard again through the circumstances of the present.
Drawn in charcoal and graphite, the figure emerges from a darkened interior while the shell is held close to her ear. Her stillness turns an ordinary gesture into a moment of listening.
Echoes of Memory reflects on what remains when people and moments have passed — the objects we keep, the memories attached to them, and the quiet ways they move from one generation to another.
