Eagle developed from my exploration of the body through yoga and the ways physical gesture can suggest an inner, spiritual state.
The drawing takes its starting point from an asana in which the body folds, crosses and extends upon itself. Seen from an unusual angle, the male figure becomes almost abstract: limbs overlap, the face partially disappears, and the familiar proportions of the body are transformed into a vertical, sculptural form.
I was drawn to the tension between strength and vulnerability within the pose. The body is muscular yet contained, disciplined yet exposed. Rather than presenting masculinity through power or action, Eagle considers another kind of strength — one found in concentration, balance and stillness.
The title refers both to the yoga pose and to the symbolic associations of the eagle with elevation, vision and transcendence. Here, the physical body becomes a threshold: grounded in its material presence while reaching towards something beyond itself.
Part of my continuing exploration of the spiritual dimension of the human figure, Eagle reflects on the body not simply as something to be observed, but as a place of awareness, beauty and inner experience.
