Awakening emerged from an ephemeral moment: the shadow of a female figure cast across a wall, briefly suspended between presence and disappearance. The image was first explored through digital sketches and collage, allowing the form to shift, dissolve, and reassemble before gradually returning to the canvas.
Painted wet-on-wet with large brushes and printmaking tools, the surface is built through translucent layers of oil paint that reveal traces of earlier gestures beneath. Blues, greys, and softened passages of light move across the composition like fragments of memory surfacing and receding. The figure is never fully fixed. She appears only partially, dissolving into atmosphere, as though emerging from water, shadow, or thought itself.
Rather than a literal portrait, Awakening reflects on the quiet threshold between inner life and outward form — the subtle moment when something begins to awaken within us before it can yet be named.
Painted in Glasgow in 2020, the work forms part of my ongoing exploration of the human body, memory, reflection, and spiritual presence through atmospheric figuration.
